Occupational training in MEC
Foundation stone
Ground breaking for the MEC in January 2006
Initiative for the occupational training of orphans and young people in our own training and production center in Mwandege, Tanzania

The cornerstone for the MEC was laid in 2006. Jointly with the American cooperation partner YWAM, the owner of the more than 5 km² large development area on the outskirts of Dar-es-Salaam, we started this project. Following the construction and finishing phase, the acquisition of teaching material and training of the technical teaching staff, operations started in January 2008. The training shop has been finished by now, currently the „set up phase“ is in progress. We intend to have a mixture of sponsored trainees and trainees whose parents are able to finance the training themselves, in our shop. This is to ensure a financially independent and stand-alone operation after the initial phase. This is genuine help for others to help themselves.
Background
SKI (Streetkids International e.V.) founds and runs orphanages in Tanzania, predominately in Dar es Salaam. The association wants to provide sustainable support; this also includes giving the children the possibility to lead a life worth living separate from SKI. Less than 20 % of the children and young people in the country attend college or further education. Vocational training possibilities are very rare and coveted. An apprenticeship is often only attainable through corruption or an inside contact

  • A training and production center with a training capacity for training approx. 130 orphans in Tanzania until 2010.

  • The training center will teach the manufacturing of products and services which are required by the local market and can be sold. The training centers also produce and offer products in the course of training.

  • During a 24-month course, young people will be trained to become tailors, joiners, electricians, metal workers or bricklayers and gardeners. All of these trades are in great demand in Tanzania and will enable the children to lead an independent life.

  • The orphaned SKI's trainees are sponsored, however, they undertake to support the house in which they grew up for at least three years after their training.

  • By creating excess capacities and offering them to external students, a continuous backflow of funds will take place which will secure the future of the training center.

  • The financial requirements for the training of 130 children and young persons will be only 150,000 Euros until 2010.
